Hi all, I've been on this tribe for a few weeks now. been in the US for 4 years now.
Often times, I am left to wonder if my american friends are offended by my jokes and comments. Worse, sometimes I think they didn't get it!!!
Do americans appreciate satire as much as the rest of the world....????

Re: Do americans appreciate satire/mockery????
Sun, May 8, 2005 - 7:18 PMI spent several summers leading tours of the Western US for foreign exchange students from many countries. There was a language barrier when it came to jokes. It amazed me that the other chaperones, who had been on trips before, couldn't figure out that the European or South American kid wouldn't catch the joke. Likewise, I don't think we USA folks always caught on.
Unfortunately, in America, if it takes too long or you have to think too hard, it isn't funny...unless you say the F-word at the end!

Sun, May 8, 2005 - 7:22 PMAnd, on this note...
One of my favorite stories is Jonathan Swift's "A Modest Proposal." I think it is hilarious--it's satire! Most American students are appalled that someone would suggest eating children to rid the country of its poor! -

Re: Do americans appreciate satire/mockery????
Sun, May 8, 2005 - 10:26 PMConsidering most American's propensity to take just about everything said or written personally, and our ability to be offended on behalf of other people, (with 'A Modest Proposal' being a prime example of that ability in action), I'd answer with a definate 'No".
I really do admire the caustic humor of the British. The TV show "The Office" was brillant for that, IMHO. -

Tue, May 10, 2005 - 4:24 PMendstart, I guess my question was more about everyday life and the folks that I meet, not TV shows, Cinemas or novels. I've seen a whole lot of satire on the big and small screens for sure!!!

Re: Do americans appreciate satire/mockery????
Thu, August 25, 2005 - 3:15 PMYOu know, I'm an American and have spent a couple of weeks on some European and British tribes and I am CONSTANTLY getting into trouble for not being serious enough or because I've said something deemed offensive somehow. It's a language barrier. My dad is English, but has lived in the US for over 40 years, and he's older. There are times when we make jokes with each other and it just doesn't work.
As far as I am concerned mock away and I'll mock back, no holds barred. Sacred Cows will be duly sacrificed.
